It might seem strange, but botanically speaking, palm trees are part of the monocotyledon group. This group is characterized by having one seed leaf and fibrous stems. The roots are also fibrous and the veins in leaves are parallel. This is opposed to dicotyledons, which have a wood stem, two seed leaves and a tap root system.
